A lot has been written on the Beach Boys first single release. Basically we're familiar with a series of 5 following issues, as shown below. But for the fanatic collector there's much more to discover. Not to discourage you, but if you REALLY want to collect a complete set of Surfin' / Luau singles, you're up for a task as there are numerous label variations to be discovered. We happily advise you to check out Frank Daniels thorough explanation on both the background/timeline of all Candix / X Records releases and the existing variations. With a big 'thank you!' to Frank for allowing us to do so.

NEW Candix 331 - Surfin' / Luau This is a very rare and unique Beach Boys’ item. Like the original Candix 331 issue, the trail off Deadwax matrix numbers are the same: CD-TS-1 on the A-side and CD-TS-2 on the B-side. As most know, the “TS” stands for “The Surfers”, an early consideration for a name for the band before they decided on “The Beach Boys”. As for the labels, what you see are Promo Labels of Candix 328 glued face down on the record. Candix 328 was a previous released by Candix artist Lanny Duncan. The songs are “Save Your Kisses” b/w “Thank You For Your Love”. On this A-side label someone wrote “Surfin” and “Beach Boys” with the time noted at 2:15 as well in Blue Ink. The B-side was not labeled. Candix did issue promotional 45s, but none were done for Candix 331. Some speculation suggests promo 45s of 331 were discarded because they were printed up with the band’s name “The Surfers”, before the band was renamed “The Beach Boys” and this would be incorrect. Still, no copies, Stock or Promo, of “Surfin’” Candix 331, by “The Surfers” has ever been found. It’s not clear why Candix used Lanny Duncan labels for this release. But this copy was pressed and given to Disc Jocky Casey Kasem back in 1961 or early 1962. It was sold several years later by auction and re-sold in 2023 on Ebay. The scans here are lifted from the Ebay listing. The seller noted it might be “one of a kind”. |
